What is Skin Tag, Wart, and Mole?

  • Skin Tags: A skin tag is a common type of skin growth that looks like a piece of hanging skin and most often develops on the neck, underarms, eyelids, and under the breasts often as a result of clothing rubbing against the skin. Most skin tags are acquired, although some people are born with them.
  • Moles: Moles and other birthmarks are benign pigmented spots or patches of skin that range in color from tan, brown and black (moles) to red, pink, or purple (vascular lesions, such as strawberry hemangiomas or port wine stains). Though most birthmarks are harmless, they may develop into cancer. Moles exhibiting any of the following warning signs should be examined by a professional immediately:
    • Larger than six millimeters.
    • Itches or bleeds.
    • Rapidly changes in color, size, or shape.
    • Has multiple colors.
    • It is located where it can’t be easily monitored, such as on the scalp.
  • Warts: Warts are skin growths caused by viruses. Different warts respond to different treatments; some go away on their own. Salicylic acid products (in the form of drops, gels, pads, and bandages) can help self-treatment of many warts by dissolving the keratin protein that makes up the wart and the dead skin above it. Others can be removed via liquid nitrogen freezing or electrical stimulation. Wart removal via surgery may be recommended for painful or large warts that do not respond to the common wart removal treatments. Laser or pulsed light therapy is most commonly used for wart removal.

How are skin tags, warts & Moles removed?

At Total SkinPro Clinic, Pune Skin tags do not have to be removed. They are not harmful, and will not become so over time. However, some people find them unsightly and choose to have them removed. Skin tag removal can be accomplished via a number of different methods. One commonly used method is cryotherapy, in which a physician, usually a dermatologist, freezes off the skin tag using liquid nitrogen. Another option is electrocautery, in which an electric probe or needle is used to burn off the skin tag. Snipping or excision, either with scissors or a scalpel, maybe a better option for larger skin tags. Because skin tag removal is considered cosmetic, these procedures are usually not covered by insurance.

It’s not a good idea to try to remove skin tags on your own. Many websites offer DIY instructions for removing skin tags by tying them off with string or applying a chemical peel. Even in a sterile environment, removing skin tags may cause bleeding, burns, and infection. It’s best to let your doctor handle the job.
